Leala Simich – Leala is an avid snorkeler and enjoys guiding tours in or around the waters of the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands. Leala’s culinary expertise centers around quality local ingredients including the best local seafood she can find. Having grown up in Los Angeles, she is proud to be fluent in many cuisines including Latin, American, and Asian. Her experience in the Caribbean has furthered her desire to branch out in culinary endeavors.

Americans Will Need a ‘Visa’ to Visit Europe in 2024
Get ready for some changes when you head to Europe next year. The European Union is introducing new travel requirements for American tourists, known as the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This means that American travelers will need to apply for travel authorization and receive approval before their departure.
But don’t worry, ETIAS is not as complicated as it sounds. It’s not a traditional visa; it’s just a quick online application that you can fill out from the comfort of your own home.
Once you’ve submitted the application, you’ll receive approval via email. Most applicants can expect to be approved within an hour, but it could take up to 96 hours if additional checks are required. The cost of the application is €7 (about $8) and it’s required for travelers of all ages. If you’re approved, the authorization is valid for multiple entries over the course of three years or until your passport expires.
Although many Americans were initially worried about having to go through another travel document process, people are finding comfort in the simplicity of ETIAS. And it’s important to note that the length of time you can stay in Europe as a tourist is not changing. US passport holders can still stay up to 90 days within a 180-day period. If you plan to stay longer, you’ll need to apply for a special visa.
So, when will this new travel authorization become a requirement? The exact date is still unclear, but it’s expected to launch in early 2024.
ETIAS is part of the EU’s efforts to tighten border security and digitally screen and track travelers entering and leaving its countries. It’s a similar system to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) program in the United States. So, think of it as Europe’s version of ESTA.
When the time comes for your European adventure, make sure you’re prepared with the necessary travel authorization. ETIAS may be a new requirement, but it’s a small price to pay for the opportunity to explore beautiful European destinations.
